Beano set to top best-seller list

THE Beano Book 1999 looks set to be the Christmas best-seller for children. The overall top selling book of 1998 was The Children's Book of Books, a mini-anthology produced by Random House and Puffin to celebrate World Book Day last April. The only books in the children's Christmas top ten which are not annuals are Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J K Rowling (Bloomsbury) and the Ladybird Treasury of Bedtime Stories. DC Thomson, which publishes both the Beano and the Dandy, was unable to supply total sales figures but an optimistic spokesman said - "we have 380,000 Beano Books out there and we plan to sell them all".
