MALAYSIA: The education minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, has supported a school for expelling a 17-year-old pupil who became Miss Teen Malaysia, saying beauty contests are not suitable for children.

A 1975 ministry circular that bans would-be beauty queens from state schools includes undergraduates unless they have permission. Fahyu Hanim Ahmad was asked to leave her school in Penang but will still be allowed to sit the national exam.
