A student from Bedford Modern School will be treading the boards stateside after he won a place on a prestigious acting course in New York City.

Year 13 pupil Alex Bloch has been offered a place at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. Alex, who acts and sings, will start the course this August with a grant of $5,000 (#163;3,358) from the conservatory.

"In some ways I will be sad to leave the UK, but New York is the centre of the acting world and I am delighted to have such an opportunity to make a career for myself, hopefully leading to professional television and film work," he said.

"Being offered a place will be like going home again, as I was born in America," he added.

Alex, who started at the independent Bedford Modern in Year 12, has had lead roles in recent school productions of West Side Story and Blood Wedding. For his audition, Alex performed two monologues. dm.
