Birthday bash

29th April 2005 at 01:00
Parliamentarians always have an eye for a good statistic, particularly if it can be flung at an enemy. The SNP's Alex Neil thought he had one when he congratulated Labour's Cathy Craigie on her 50th birthday, during the recent debate on the skills gap.

"I am sorry to say that the SNP always gets its figures wrong," the ebullient Labourite replied. "I am actually 51 today."

This may be the first recorded instance of a lady not lying about her age in order to get the better of a political opponent.
