The cheek of some folk knows no bounds. A southern-based outfit called SSER Ltd has just set up shop in Scotland in much the same line of business as SSERC Ltd with which it is often confused. "More than irritating" is the gentle response of the afore-mentioned Scottish Schools Equipment Research Centre.

The SSERC did not stay gentle for long, however. Its bulletin says it "couldn't possibly comment" on the quality of SSER's wares but goes on to put the boot in. "Don't buy a SSER Ltd science policy framework - not at pound;29.38 a throw at any rate. Send us a couple of quid and we'll let you have a tartanised framework."

Good to see that the ruthless competitive spirit is not completely dead in the public sector.
