The British Academy of Television Arts (BAFTA) is to make its first separate awards for children's programmes on September 27. Of these, the BBC has 11 programmes nominated, including five from BBC Schools. These include episodes of Focus, Scene, African Portraits and USA 2000. ITV Schools is in the running with Off Limits, The German Programme and The Music Show, as well as heading the category for Children's Drama with three out four of the nominations.

u 100 not out: as part of the continuing celebrations for 100 years of cinema, the British Film Institute is running two events of interest to teachers. The first is The Story of the Century, a two-day conference at the National Film Theatre in London from October 2-4, which will cover the development of news film from the first report of Lord Rosebery's horse winning the 1895 Derby. Speakers include John Simpson on censorship and control and Kate Adie on the ethics of reporting violence. Cost Pounds 275 or Pounds 125 per day. The second event is an Inset day, Independent Means, for teachers on Monday, October 7 at the Cornerhouse Cinema Centre, Manchester. Academics and experts, including independent film and television makers will discuss their craft and how to teach it, and teachers can attend workshops. The cost is Pounds 55 including lunch.
