Useful reading for anyone organising a school visit by a children's writer is A Novel Experience: Fiction Writers in Education, a free London Arts Board guide. The LAB's emphasis on prose writers - Jean Ure, Beverley Naidoo, Denis Bond and Francesca Simon are among the contributors - complements the Better English Campaign's nationwide series of seminars on poets in schools, organised by the National Association of Writers in Education earlier this year.

Telephone Jean du Pre on 0171 240 1313 for a copy of the booklet and for details of an LAB event for teachers and writers at the Royal Festival Hall, London, on November 22. NAWE is also launching a database of 300 London-based writers in September (it has applied for National Lottery funding for a national database on two Web sites: www.poptel.org.uk\arts and www.naw. co.uk
