I was pleased to see the curriculum article on the teaching of meteorology in schools ("Hot Topic", TES Magazine, November 6), but teachers don't have to wait until secondary school to teach meteorology.

My Year 3 class is monitoring minimum and maximum temperatures and changes in pressure on a daily basis and also trying to predict the weather for the following day - a good way for them to realise just how hard it is to forecast. This activity sits well within both the maths and science curriculum at primary school.

As a former scientist I believe that it is critical to foster a love of science at primary school to ensure a life-long interest and to potentially generate the scientists we need for the future.
