Biographical notes supplied by speakers are rarely fun but Ross Martin, education convener in West Lothian, livened up the delegates' pack for the Livingston under-eights conference (page five) when he recalled an embarrassing moment while visiting Mid Calder nursery.

The first child to greet him was sick on his shoes. "That's why I became a secondary teacher."
