TALKING OF Ms Hodge, welcome aboard to Barry Sheerman, ultra-loyal Labour MP for Huddersfield and, the Diary gathers, the new holder of herself's old office, the chair of the education select committee.

Once described (unfairly, surely) as a new Labour poodle worthy of a Crufts award for obedience, he is best known for proposing we celebrate the Millennium by knocking down Britain's ugliest buildings (starting with Buckingham Palace).
