CREATING READERS FOR LIFE

The UK Literacy Association is holding this conference at Hale Hall, Edge Hill College, St Helen's Road, Ormskirk, Lancashire, 10am-1pm.

Author Tony Martin, who was president of UKLA in 1997-98, will explore whether there is a tension between the textual analysis of stories and poems and reading them for pleasure. Fee: pound;15, pound;12 members, pound;10 concessions.

"SUNFLOWER POWER" SCHOOLS CHALLENGE

Primary schools are invited to compete to grow the tallest sunflower while raising sponsorship - half for themselves and the other half for Action for Blind People. Free packs linking sunflowers and visual impairment into the biology, science, art, literature and design and technology curricula will be available from February.

The project runs from Easter to the end of the summer term. Last year's winner was Wiggonby Church of England School in Cumbria, with a sunflower taller than three metres.

GOAT FOR IT

This new Christian Aid campaign raises awareness about how having a goat can make all the difference to villagers in poor countries, such as Rwanda and Bangladesh. It includes a web game for children and a teachers' pack containing classroom activities and fundraising ideas. There is also the chance to sponsor a goat and receive updates on its progress.
