Salsa dancing, cheerleading, hula, martial fitness, circus acts, limbo and seated volleyball are among the out-of-school activities available to ages 7to 11 as part of a Youth Support Trust scheme, supported by Sainsbury's Active Kids campaign. It is being piloted in 500 schools through School Sport Partnerships. Free schools resources include activity cards, DVDs, music CDs and equipment bags.

Giving Nation, a Citizenship Foundation project, invites schools to record their charity work from the past year on its site and organise fundraising activities. There are eight prizes of a London trip and pound;1,000 and an overall prize of a week's residential at a National Trust site.

Kitchen goddesses

This free exhibition at Callendar House, Falkirk, celebrates women who have influenced cookery since Georgian times. Exhibits include early 19th-century recipes by Meg Dods and her Cleikum Culinary Club, Mrs Beeton's 1860s writings and some Elisabeth David kitchenware. The accompanying programme includes workshops and food tasting.

Clore Arts Awards

More than pound;100,000 was recently divided between 15 projects, including a theatre script factory for Sheffield schools, theatre work with Asian pupils in Bradford and astronomy-inspired music workshops for special needs students. The grants will be awarded twice a year until the end of 2009. Applications for the next round are now invited.


Mandarin in Scotland

Member schools of the thriving Scotland-China Schools Educational Network are linking with partners in China and working with the Scottish QCA to develop Mandarin courses for non-native speakers. A pupil conference, Scotland Meets China, was recently held at St George's School, Edinburgh.
