Headlines this week about the "worst teacher shortage in living memory" conjured up images of one of those African droughts where nobody can account for the failure of the rains. Perhaps wannabe rainmakers should log on to the TES website's discussion boards for an insight into just how enticing some schools can be to recruits.
One web contributor relived his favourite job interview: "I realised that one school was not for me while being shown around by an articulate Year 11 boy. We arrived on the playing fields and a class was doing track and field (javelin). Suddenly, there were shouts of abuse from a class on the top floor and another on the bottom floor. Those on the field got tired of this and started tossing the javelins at the school - and at us! Both of us beat a hasty retreat. My retreat, may I add, was to the nearest exit sign."
