And so to a management memo of June 27 from David Elliot, now departed head of awards at the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

Elliot advised: "We are still targeted on 9 August (for issuing the exam results) and further contingency planning is taking place to ensure we meet that date. We had a meeting with senior civi servants and HMI this morning and they were very supportive.

"President Harry Truman said, if you can't stand the heat, keep out of the kitchen.

"Our business keeps us permanently in the kitchen, but it won't always be as hot as this!"

He probably wishes he'd never penned this . . . with hindsight.
