Newsagents' shelves sag under the weight of computer magazines for technophiles, but there is little for those people who are fascinated by information technology but are cool about com-puters. Now there is Wired (first issue last Friday, Pounds 3.50), the new UK edition of the hip American magazine that takes a fresh look at the social and philosophical issues.

The Labour Party's spokeswoman on IT and education, Anne Campbell, is speaking at a one-day conference at Sheffield Hallam University on Tuesday April 4. Called "What are the curricular implications for IT now?", it is organised by both the Sheffield universities and the National Council for Educational Technology (speaker Frances Howlett), cost Pounds 30.
