Call to pay governors

Chairs of school governing bodies should be paid up to pound;1,000 a year and all governors should receive up to pound;32 a day for attending meetings, Labour councillors say. The proposals, by the Local Government Association's Labour group, seek to reward the "vital work" of governos and would cost around pound;110 million a year. But Chris Gale, chair of the National Governors' Council, believes higher payments to chairs would be wrong as they would single out individuals. "The whole point of a governing body is its corporate nature," she said.
