Staff at the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities looked on in amazement last Friday as a 6ft 3in secondary headteacher appeared wearing academic gown and mortarboard and wielding a pointer.

Kenny Dykes of Barrhead High was determined to make his mark as East Renfrewshire elaborated on its Cosla Quality Award entry. His subject was the council's education programme for heads, presented through an old-style lesson which even included a worksheet and homework for the judges.

Dykes is hoping for 10 out of 10 when the results are announced at the end of the month.
