YOUR survey on teacher recruitment (TES, September 8) says that 4,000 vacancies existed for teachers in the UK at the start of the school year.
In London we have a serious problem with recruitment and a heavy reliance on agency staff, up to 10 per cent of the teaching force, disguises the full extent of the crisis.
This situation is likely to get worse. Research published by the University of North London concludes that 40 per cent of all teaching staff in the capital intend to leave London in five years.
The Associatio of London Government applauds innovative solutions from individual councils. However, it is up to the Government to put together a comprehensive strategy to combat this problem.
The association would urge the Government to relax current regulations relating to employing overseas teachers and to act on a variety of submissions made by us with regard to affordable housing for key workers in London.
