Opportunities to go classical
This year sees the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies, (the "Hellenic Society"), celebrate its 125th anniversary.
Its aim is to further the study of Greek language, history, literature, art and archaeology; it regularly makes grant aid available. In this "Olympics" year it is especially promoting growth of Greek and Hellenic studies in schools - particularly at key stage 2.
Grants typically range from pound;50 to pound;300, and are made for books and other teaching materials, "Classics Days", Greek plays by schools and even summer schools.
An anniversary competition with categories for key stages 2, 3 and 4, and sixth-form students, will offer cash prizes of more than pound;1,000, as well as books and videos. The sixth-form winner will have the option of a trip to Greece. Visit the website for application forms.
A quiz for the same age groups (there are no prizes for this), is just one of the feast of resources on the society's website. Others include How to Read Greek, Gods and Goddesses, Greek Alphabet, Odysseus Crossword, and Olympic Games Crossword.
There are free and subsidised books and CDs, and the website provides links to organisations offering materials and downloads, as well as groups that visit schools.
If you want costumed workshops, Greek theatre, puppet shows, re-enactments with Greek soldiers, or even a demonstration of Greek warfare, this is the place to find them.
