Challenge extended

A scheme to raise standards in London schools will be extended and replicated in two more UK cities, Alan Johnson, the Education Secretary, has announced.

The London Challenge, which was launched in 2003, will receive funding for a further three years beyond 2008, Mr Johnson said.

He said there were plans to launch the initiative in two other urban areas, which are yet to be named.
