Ottoline and the Yellow Cat. By Chris Riddell Macmillan Children's Books Pounds 8.99. Ages seven to nine

Ottoline is an endearing heroine and a treat for confident young readers in this series of short novels. Chris Riddell revels in the fantastical and the absurd in his virtuoso line drawings and his account of the intrepid Ottoline's investigative adventures (in this story, chasing a cat burglar) is never short of absurdity.

Ottoline enjoys a sumptuous life in a penthouse but is neglected by her parents who are always absent on their own adventures: their postcards home are a perfect device for reader participation.
