Class sizes up the stakes

5th March 1999 at 00:00
The EIS wants maximum class sizes in primary and the first two years of secondary reduced from the current maximum of 33 to 25. The primary 1 intake should be lower still.

The present Standard grade maximum of 30 should be cut in stages to 20 and practical classes cut from 20 to 15. Composite classes should be reduced in line with other reductions.

In nurseries, there should be one adult to every 10 children with one teacher and one nursery assistant to every 20 children.
