Commitment to mature students must stay

I was delighted to read Ray Glenn's letter "Never too late to become a teacher" (Friday, November 17) expressing his enjoyment and recognition of the support he has received on the BA education and literacy course at Edge Hill college.

The teaching team is committed to part-time "mature" students and recognises the richness of the experiences they bring to degree study. We agree that "it is never too late" to learn.

It is hoped that in a climate o need for the best possible teachers, and in the spirit of lifelong learning, opportunities for such students will be sustained.

The qualities of these students, who often work in support roles in schools, offer excellent potential to enhance teaching. We hope it is a source that will be tapped, and that specific opportunities for them will be a key feature of future QTS courses.Mark SchofieldEdge Hill College of Higher Education, Lancashire
