THE STANLEY DESIGN CHALLENGE. Children and young people are invited "to design a stylish, competitively priced screwdriver having excellent performance in all conditions: dry hands and wetoily hands". Closing date for sketches, drawings or photographs is February 28. Stanley tools worth up to Pounds 150 will be awarded to the winner of each age group (up to 12; 13 to 16; and 17 to 21) and a Stanley Magnum screwdriver to the top 500 designs. Groups of up to five aspiring journalists aged 12 to 14 are invited to create an A4 magazine of up to eight pages designed to make young readers aware of various consumer topics selected from specified subjects. Cash prizes totalling Pounds 100,000 are on offer. The top team will receive 1,000 ecus (about Pounds 840) and their entry will go forward to the European final for the chance of winning a further 2,500 ecus (about Pounds 2,100) and a trip to Brussels.
