EXPO98, the 1998 World Exhibition in Lisbon is focusing on the oceans and the space that surrounds us. Internet activities on the theme and two competitions (not requiring Internet access) are being launched simultaneously in most European countries on March 1. Winners of the senior competition, which asks 14 to 19-year-olds to create a newspaper, will go to EXPO 98 for a grand final. Overall winners will go to Europe's space port inFrench Guyana to watch an Ariane rocket launch, or to the European Southern Observatory's powerful telescope at the Cerro Paranal Observatory in Chile. Winners of the junior competition, which asks 10 to 13-year-olds to design a poster, will have their work displayed at EXPO 98. The interactive Sea and Space Home Page will allow pupils to perform field experiments and astronomical observations and to obtain and process satellite images.
