"Reaching Out" is the theme of the Association for Language Learning's annual Language World conference and exhibition taking place at Oxford University, April 2 to 4. Strands include: primary, key stage 3 framework, e-learning and promoting languages. Speakers include: European Commission representatives on the promotion of language learning and linguistic diversity at European level; and Dr Lid King, the Government's national director for languages, on the first year of the National Languages Strategy. A separate accreditation conference on the Friday will include a plenary session by Kate Green on the National Recognition Scheme.

The Primary Languages Show organised by CILT, the National Centre for Languages, will be held at Manchester Conference Centre, March 12 to 13.

Key speaker Dr Lid King will outline government plans for early language learning. The conference will also explore how teachers are meeting the challenge, how language colleges and primary schools are working together, and how learners can reach high standards. CILT is running training days to introduce schools to the framework for teaching KS3 modern foreign languages. These will take place in London, February 4, Crawley, February 6, Leeds, February 25. Most of the costs of CILT courses abroad are funded by Comenius 2.2 grants of up to E1,500 from the British Council Education and Training Group. They include: Berlin Aktuell for teachers of GCSE, A-level and equivalent Scottish qualifications, April 1 to 9, Goethe-Institut Berlin, E1,500.

Spanish for the primary school, May 30 to June 5, venue to be confirmed, E1,100. Teaching Spanish in the secondary school, May 30 to June 12, University of Navarra, Pamploma, E1,650. French for the primary school, Le Chateau d'Ebblinghem, St Omer France, E1,100.
