There are no more exotic names in union circles than the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teacher's general secretary Nigel de Gruchy and his Scottish henchman Tino Ferri.

De Gruchy came north to open his union's Scottish HQ in Edinburgh last Friday.

The "frozen north" was his actual phrase since, as he reminded us, "I'm from Jersey so the north for me begins in Guernsey."

The new offices command an impressive view along Princes Street and Ferri confesses he already has an eye on the balcony to enthuse his supporters, like another very famous Italian statesman.
