Cumbria County Council launches Bookstart programme

Cumbria County Council is launching a Bookstart programme this week after consulting Ann Scott at Sunderland Library Services. The idea is to "get a book into the hands of every child in the county".

All parents of children under three who enrol their child at the local library will be issued with linen plimsoll bags containing My First ABC, by Debbie MacKinnon and Anthea Sieveking, as well as a bookmark which lists essential first reading skills, a recommended library reading list, information about other children's services and stickers. Up to 6,000 packs are being issued costing the county council Pounds 9,700.
