Language teaching in primaries

Two one-day training courses are aiming to help boost language teaching in primary schools. Beyond the Cuddly Toy, on June 17, looks at how teachers can develop languages at key stage 2, while Starting Out, on July 1, targets those about to implement language teaching. Both courses are run by Cilt, the national centre for languages, and take place in London. For details, go to www.cilt.org.uk.

Gut idea to learn German

The state of language learning is the subject of a national conference later this month. Think German has been organised by the German embassy, the Goethe Institut, the German Academic Exchange Service and the UK-German Connection, and aims to showcase good practice and look at ways of improving language learning, including emphasising the benefits of learning German. The conference will take place in Surrey on June 25. For details, go to www.thinkgerman.org.uk.

Primary French boost

A series of ready-to-use whiteboard materials has been put together to help primary French teachers. Tools for Schools French has been drawn up by Cilt, the national centre for languages, and includes stories, games and audio files. Units 1-6 are now available, and others, in languages including German and Spanish, will be made available in the coming months. For details, go to www.cilt.org.uk.
