Data eclipsed by exam tables

30th January 1998 at 00:00
The leaver destinations and school costs tables were released by the Scottish Office without fanfare on Monday, in contrast to the high-profile presentations that mark the publication of exam results and school attendance figures.

The Government is giving active consideration to the future reporting of leaver and cost figures, believing them to be even more capable of misinterpretation than other school data.

The Scottish Office is likely to cease publishing the tables in their current form, although it will still collect the information because of the use made of it by others such as the Accounts Commission and the local authorities.

Hinting at changes Brian Wilson, the Education Minister, commented: "I have said to my action group on standards that I plan to ask them to review the information that we provide for parents and to make recommendations on the scope and kind of information that we should provide in future years."
