David Almond 's The Fire-Eaters and Michael Morpurgo's Private Peaceful have won National Literacy Association WOW! Awards: as well as their literary strengths, they've been rated likely to motivate key stage 3 readers "who weren't necessarily struggling or lacking in ability with reading but perhaps lacked reading stamina and experience and needed something special". There are eight WOW! awards this year for the cream of the NLA's latest Guide to Literacy Resources, launched at the Education Show last week. More details on nla@argonet.co.uk.
