David Blunkett announces effective careers education

* Education and Employment Secretary David Blunkett announced an extra Pounds 5.5 million this week to ensure that every young person gets effective careers education and guidance.

Speaking at the Careers Service National Association's annual meeting, Mr Blunkett said the failure of one in five young people to finish A-levels or GNVQs was costing taxpayers Pounds 500m a year.
