Department chiefs' true salaries

15th December 2000 at 00:00
AS a public servant I have never had a problem disclosing my annual salary ("The roles that pay - and those that don't", TES, December 8). I am happy to reveal that for 20002001 my salary is in the range of pound;140,000 to pound;150,000.

My colleague,David Normington, director-general of the Schools' Directorate, takes a similar view - he will earn between pound;110,000 and pound;120,000 this year.

Sir Michael Bichard Permanent secretary Department for Education and Employment London SW1
