Over three years, an additional Pounds 629 million for schools, Pounds 138m for pre-school education and Pounds 91m for child care (leading to Pounds 500m in three years for child care and pre-school), Pounds 214m for further education colleges and Pounds 230m for universities.

A division of schools' cash reveals an extra Pounds 185m for buildings, another Pounds 36m to extend the early intervention scheme to improve the basics in primaries, Pounds 49m to cut class sizes in the first three years of primary, and Pounds 66m to employ up to 5,000 classroom assistants to reduce the adult to child ratio in primaries to 1:15.

The assistants' cash will come from an excellence fund within the Scottish Office block. It is also likely to provide at least Pounds 10m for Higher Still developments, out-of-school learning activities, piloting of "full-service schools", in-service training, special education initiatives and the alternatives to exclusion programme.
