* There are 62 zoos in the country which are members of the UK Federation of Zoos. There are about 1,000 world-wide.

* British zoos have 13 million visitors a year. About a million are children and more than half of those use zoo education departments. These figuresare increasing annually.

* Education departments cover large areas of the national curriculum and cross-curricular themes.

u A European Zoos Directive which come into force in 2002 features a requirement that every zoo has a written education policy.
