Diplomatic plea for languages

The outgoing German ambassador to Britain has stressed that language learning is vital if Britain is to play a full role in Europe and the world. Thomas Matussek, who leaves Britain next year, said languages were an important political tool. He said: "It is because I believe that languages have an essential part to play in...enhancing understanding that I have made promotion of language-learning such a priority in my work."
