Disk's star turn for special needs

3rd January 2003 at 00:00
The Association for Science Education (ASE) and the National Association for Special Educational Needs (NASEN) have been working together to support inclusion in science.

The co-operation has resulted in a CD-ROM of resources, with full-scale investigations, activities and practical suggestions for managing special educational needs in science. The materials aim to support mainstream and special school teaching for students from 10 to 14 years. They are being made available through the Inclusive Science and Special Educational Needs (ISSEN) website. Contents include:

* Torches and Colour: interactive demonstrations to reinforce principles and ideas about light

* Microscale Chemistry: a flexible and ingenious approach to chemistry experiments, in which students investigate their reactions on clear plastic sheets placed on top of the worksheets.

* Coastline Protection: activities include investigating how to create a protective sea wall

* Supporting Access in Science: guidance and ideas for special educational needs in science.

Mainstream secondary schools will receive a copy of the CD-ROM, and it will be available to special schools through Key Stage 3 Strategy training.

The project has been supported by the Department for Education and Skills'

SEN Small Programmes Fund, with the Science Enhancement Programme (SEP) supporting the reproduction and distribution of the CD-ROM.
