General studies certainly can count. My younger daughter had been accepted to read English at university but gained a D rather than the expected A.
After the expected threats to kill herself, she went through "clearing", but was not happy with what was on offer.
In desperation, she rang her original university and spoke to the admissions officer.
"Just remind me of your results".
"A 'B' at general studies? I'm sure we can find a place for someone who can get a B at general studies".
She took a degree in her subsidiary subject and gained the only first-class honours degree in that subject that year. She is now doing research.
