THE DARK side of the Internet was exposed last month when a British man was jailed after forming a relationship via email with a 15-year-old American girl. Ian Waddup, of Newcastle, was jailed for 180 days, with 90 days suspended.

The 37-year-old father of four was arrested as he tried to take the schoolgirl to a hotel in Cincinnati in February. Waddup was charged with interfering with the custody of a child. He has at least three convictions in Britain for sex offences with children under 13 between 1977 and 1994.

Waddup ran up a pound;12,000 bill on his chat-room and phone conversations with the girl, which began in January 1998.
