KS34: divorced from their music, rock and pop lyrics can seem banal, trite or incomprehensible - but they can offer a way into defining and studying some of the building blocks of poetry, and to explore the relationship between poetry and song. Find lyrics at www.lyrics.com - avoid hilarious and disruptive mondegreens (www. rulefortytwo.commondegreens.htm). Ask pupils to identify patterns in the lyric - rhyme, rhythm, repetition - and to comment on images and vocabulary. Do the same for poems that are part of their programme of study. What similarities and differences can they see between lyric and poem? Ask them to identify poems that would be easy or difficult to set to music - ballads or Browning, perhaps.
