Read stanzas 7-14 of Fitzgerald's "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" with students, and examine the imagery the poet uses to convey the transitory nature of existence. What is the effect of "cash in hand" in stanza 12? What sort of person do they think is speaking?


Students could read Coleridge's "Xanadu", preferably aloud. To what extent is the poem's power derived from its surreal quality, and from rhyme and rhythm?
