Expected fall

13th December 1996 at 00:00
"Less obviously good is the fall in science (key stage 2) by 8 percentage points" (TES, leader, November 22).

This year's KS2 science was made deliberately harder, to include the level 5 questions of which there were insufficient last year. This was made clear in the test arrangements booklet set to every school. The percentage fall would be expected even if standards were the same. The TES is the one paper which should not need to have this pointed out.
