Prime Minister Gordon Brown warned that the recession should not lead to a repeat of the "lost generation of the 1980s" as he marked an extension of the young person's guarantee. It means every young person unemployed for six months will be offered work, training or an internship from today, and by April they will be obliged to accept. Up to 470,000 people could be affected over the next 15 months, according to government figures.
