Faces of the Vikings

York is the home of the Jorvik Viking Centre run by Heritage Projects. It contains authentic models with faces sculpted from laser-scanned Viking-age skulls. Young visitors can learn about Viking diet and disease from the contents of cess pits, quiz the archaeologist, dress up as a raider or trader, and meet Gamall the Fearless and Hildre the Good. Tel: 01904 653000.

Also in York is the Archaeological Resource Centre. Visitors can find out everything from how to sew a Roman shoe to trying out the ancient crafts of spinning, weaving and leatherworking. Tel: 01904 654324.
