* Around 28.5 million patients are registered with NHS dentists - 45 per cent of all adults and 62 per cent of children

* Of those with teeth, 50 per cent regularly go for check-ups, and 14 per cent occasionally. The other 36 per cent go only when in pan

* Almost one adult in three has 12 or more fillings, but among 16 to 24-year-olds, the figure falls to 10 per cent

* In 1979, 28 per cent of adults had no teeth. Today only 10 per cent have none
