Families get new director

The Department for Education and Skills has appointed its first director general for children and families. Tom Jeffery's key task will be persuading education and social services to work together. He has worked for the Department of Health as well as education, and been involved in cross-departmental work on projects such as Sure Start and improving the educational attainment of looked-after children.
