Speed dating is the latest way of judging politicians, we have learnt. And the latest accolade has been picked up by Peter McNamara, education convener in North Ayrshire, who was, improbably, voted "most engaging politician" by young people at an event in Edinburgh last week.

Tables were arranged in a traditional speed dating format and the youngsters had three minutes to speak to each of the politicians in turn.

The engaging McNamara emerged triumphant.
