An absent honoured guest at the SSTA's Dundee conference was Tino Ferri, the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers' representative on its UK body. But the Ferri name was present in the form of his wife, Annette, who belongs to the rival union.
Bill Guthrie, SSTA president, sought to explain the great man's absence. "His wife wouldn't let him come," he told delegates.
Even more curious was the NASUWT absence from the Scottish TUC in Perth last week, except for a fleeting glimpse of Ferri (Tino) at a drinks' bash hosted by the education unions. Three motions tabled by the NASUWT were withdrawn.
Speculation that internal disagreements about the motions prompted the withdrawal are wide of the mark. It was purely down to difficulties in getting time off and securing hotel bookings, Jotter is assured.
For the record, Ferri (Annette) made the STUC.
