Festival highlights

Celtic Connections runs until January 28, with the Big Finale in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall featuring Iris DeMent, Laura Cantrell, Janis Ian and Suzzy Roche.

Over the next two weekends the concert hall will host workshops organised by traditional musician Caroline Hewat from Inverness. Among the instruments featured are piano accordion, banjo, tin whistle, bodhran and guitar. There will also be sessions in step dancing and singing. For details call 0141 353 8000.

Other community events include: Friday, January 19

Alasdair Fraser and The Alasdair Fraser School of Fiddling performing at the Pearce Institute, Govan, 7.30pm-9.30pm, followed by a ceilidh. Admission pound;3.50pound;2.

Sundy, January 21

St Francis Pipe Band from Glasgow and Breton band Bagad Kemper at the St Francis Centre, Cumberland Street, Gorbals. 7.30pm. pound;3.50pound;2.

Monday, January 22

Hazel and Jennifer Wrigley heading a bill of community groups at the Royal Concert Hall. 11am. Tickets free.

Wednesday, January 24

Iron Horse and the Wrigley Sisters for primary and special schools. Royal Concert Hall, 11am. Tickets free.

Thursday, January 25

Deaf Shepherd and a local youth band appearing at Castlemilk Youth Complex at 7pm. pound;2pound;1.

Saturday, January 27

Danu, "young, Irish and brilliant", at the Community Central Hall, Maryhill, 8pm; ceilidh at 10.30pm. pound;3.50pound;2.
