Figures for absenteeism in the workplace

* Comparative figures for absenteeism in the workplace show that workers who "throw sickies" when they are healthy cost businesses about pound;2 billion a year.

The Confederation of British Industry said firms paid out a further pound;9.85 billion on temporary cover for workers who had a genuine reasons for not being at work.
